The 7800 was Atari's answer to the Colecovision, it had better graphics and sound and could make arcade games look like the original instead of the 2600 blocks and pixels. It wasn't marketed too much but could use the 2600 carts. By this time my father had bought us a Commodore 64 and the 7800 was irrelevant when the 800XL came out.
